Gillian Anderson's Tragic Journey: A Heart-Wrenching Account of Alleged Hospital Negligence

In July 2021, Gillian Anderson's life took a devastating turn when her mother was admitted to Blackburn Royal Hospital with breathing problems associated with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). What followed was a harrowing series of events that left Gillian devastated and questioning the care her mother received. She is now seeking justice for what she believes was hospital negligence.

After a number of days of care at the Blackburn Royal Hospital, Gillian was reassured that her mother's condition was improving. However, on July 14th, the hospital left an answerphone message to say her mother had taken a sudden turn for the worse and that she should call them. When Gillian spoke to the hospital she asked "is my mother going to die?", "yes" they replied. Racing to the hospital, she found her mother heavily medicated with Midazolam and Morphine. 

Gillian voiced her concerns about the treatment which they claimed was "settling her". At one point Gillian's mother looked up at her and said "I don't want to die!" and went on to tell Gillian she had called the Police from her hospital bed. On hearing this, Gillian demanded they arrange for her mother to go home to die, as she knew this would be what she wanted. 

Family members stayed with Gillian's mum from 11AM that morning until an ambulance was made available to take her home. She still had the Morphine and Midazolam drivers in her right up until she died. In all that time nobody brought her any food or drink. Once she was home, Gillian asked her if she wanted something to eat, she said yes, she had a small amount of chicken soup some Tiramisu and a drink of coke. The following morning on 15th July 2021 at 06:20 AM she passed away. She was just over 6 stone when she died. 

After her death Gillian contacted the Police regarding the calls her mother had made from the hospital. They gave her a log number but refused to provide any more detail. On a later call with the Coroner Gillian raised her concerns, explaining the phone calls and her own suspicions of "foul play". When the Coroner rang back, he said her Mother was apparently saying she was being held against her will and wanted to go home and that during the call a nurse took the phone from her mother and said everything was OK. To which Gillian's response was "just because the nurse said it was OK doesn't mean it was". At the very least, the Police should have followed up this call with a visit, but they didn't!

The Coroner then went on to say that if Gillian went on to request an autopsy it would just come back that she'd died from COPD. Gillian couldn't bear the thought of her mother being cut up so didn't progress it further. 

Gillian requested a meeting with the hospital which was held on 18th January 2022 with DR Anwar. He was the doctor responsible for her mother's treatment who put her on the end-of-life drugs Midazolam and Morphine. Sister Leanne Smith and Matron Tracy Barnes-Clark were also in attendance. Gillian raised a number of questions about the way they had treated her mother and the fact that she was never informed of the decision to put her mother on end-of-life nor ever asked for consent to proceed with the protocol. Gillian left the meeting totally dissatisfied with the answers they gave. 

Gillian quite rightly believes her mother knew they were killing her off (evidenced by the phone calls to the Police). The mere fact she did this from her hospital bed suggests her mother was certainly distressed, did not want to die and would not be willing to give consent for end-of-life treatment. 

There are also other anomalies such as sections crossed out on her Medication Administration Record (MAR) charts. When questioned about this the hospital claimed they were crossed off because those drugs were offered to Gillian's mother and she refused them. This made no sense at all given drugs are only added to the MAR chart once the medication has actually been administered. 

It goes without saying that Gillian is totally devastated by the loss of her mother and that if she hadn't gone into hospital that day she would more than likely still be alive now!

Gillian took her case to the Ombudsman in August 2022 and is still awaiting a response.
